Yankees to Retire Joe Torre’s Number

May 8, 2014 by Evan Vitale

The Yankees announced today that they will be retiring Joe Torre’s #6 jersey. Torre is the third Yankees manager to have his number retired, joining Casey Stengel and Billy Martin.

Torre’s jersey will be only the 17th jersey retired in the Yankees’ rich history. During his campaign with the club, Torre led the Yankees to four World Series championships and six American League pennants.

The Yankees also announced Thursday that they will be honoring Goose Gossage, Paul O’Neill and Tino Martinez by placing plaques throughout Monument Park this summer. Bernie Williams will be honored next season.

Torre will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in July.
